U.S. Russia and Putin Foreign Policy Expert

Angela Stent is a recognized authority on foreign policy, with a distinguished career that spans academia, government, and international affairs.  A leading expert on U.S.-Russian relations, Dr. Stent is professor in Georgetown University’s Department of Government and School of Foreign Service, where she directs the University’s Center for Eurasian, Russian, and East European Studies.

Her new book — Putin’s World: Russia against the West and with the Rest – is described by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as a “brilliant exploration” and “an important window into one of the key geopolitical challenges of our time.”  Former World Bank president and Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick compares Putin’s World to the work of the legendary diplomat George Kennan. Best-selling author Walter Isaacson calls Putin’s World  “deeply knowledgeable and readable” – and “brilliant”.

Putin’s World is a culmination of Dr. Stent’s distinguished career as a scholar and practitioner in foreign policy.  Dr. Stent is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow of The Brookings Institution, where she leads the Hewitt Forum on Post-Soviet Affairs.  She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Institute for Strategic Studies.   In government, she served as the National Intelligence Officer for Russia and Eurasia on the National Intelligence Council and as the Russian expert in the Office of Policy Planning at the U.S. Department of State. She has also been a senior advisory panel member for two NATO Supreme Allied Commanders in Europe.

Dr. Stent is the author of several highly-regarded books, including From Embargo to Ostpolitik: the Political Economy of West German-Soviet Affairs” and Russia and Germany Reborn: Unification, the Soviet Collapse, and the New Europe.   Her last book, The Limits of Partnership: U.S. Russian Relations in the Twenty-First Century, received recognition as one of Bloomberg Businessweek’s Best Books of 2015 and received the Douglas Dillon Award from the American Academy of Diplomacy, which described The Limits of Partnership as “must reading for anyone who wants to understand the current U.S.-Russian confrontation.”

Dr. Stent studied on a British Council fellowship at Moscow State University during one of the most tense times in the Cold War. She has been a fellow at the American Academy in Berlin and at the German Marshall Fund’s Transatlantic Academy. As a Fulbright Fellow, she was a visiting professor at Moscow State Institute of International Relations, where she had the interesting experience of teaching Russian students about Russian and American foreign policy in the era of Vladimir Putin.

Dr. Stent received her B.A. from Cambridge University, her M.Sc. with distinction from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University.
